SOLACE

Humanism will affirm life rather than deny it, seek to elicit the possibilities of life, not flee from it, and endeavor to establish the conditions of satisfactory life for all, not merely for the few.

The only thing that now a days a parent expects from their wards who study in a school is nothing but full marks in every academic subject. To them education is confined to a definition of marks and grades. So do the educational institutions by accentuating their achievement in the form of cent percent result in the examinations .They aim to encourage the growth of intellectual curiosity and creativity as habits of learning through a broad based and balanced curriculum. Subjects are taught by specialist teachers in specialist teaching areas – excellent.

But what about the society. The society will not move an inch by making someone capable of scoring cent percent in five subjects for it is a group of people related to each other through persistent relations, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or virtual territory, subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. It is characterized by patterns of relationships between individuals who share a distinctive culture and institutions. It is nothing but a sum total of such relationships among its constituent members. A society can also consist of like-minded people governed by their own norms and values within a dominant, larger society. This is sometimes referred to as a subculture.Education, if looked at beyond its conventional boundaries, forms the very essence of all our actions. What we do is what we know and have learned, either through instructions or through observation and assimilation. Nonetheless, the importance of education in society is indispensable and cohering, which is why society and knowledge cannot be ever separated into two distinct entities.

Social service or work is old in practice but new as a profession. We at Aliya neither wanted to make it a practice nor a profession but a culture and life style which a student follows without exigency. We wanted to provide a holistic learning rather than mere subject transactions. It was not an easy task as the parents think education as a tool for reaching a specific target or personal mark and after which there is no further need to seek greater education. We had to amalgamate academic subjects with a task that required supererogatory field work and abalienation which must be brought into the prehension of the parents who were too sensitive in parenting their children and do have a different perspective or vista when sending their wards to a CBSE school and the teachers who were given stipulated time for the completion of their portions. After many days of reflection ,it was decided to establish a club through which the students can contribute their approximation, aspiration, moxie, dauntlessness, and pin money for the amelioration of the populace by which through the repetitive work they form a culture and make it a habit. This is possible only when the parents consider it as something which is a part of the curriculum.

A fraternity was established with the name SOLACE on July 16th 2011 at Aliya Senior Secondary School. The name was declared at the Union Day Inauguration by Er C H Muhammed, the manager of Aliya Senior Secondary School in the presence of Jb K.V Aboobacker Omari, the vice president of Aliya Managing Committee and Mr Vinod Chandran , the Kasaragod Press Club President. All the heads of different clubs of Aliya Senior Secondary School unitedly accepted the insignia from the manager. The Principal was made the project head. Here begins the opening of the activities of SOLACE. Food ,medicine and education were the fields where the students have to work.Funding was the next major thing we had to take care of. A collection of the pocket money was made through the Friday fund which was collected once in a week. The management and a few teachers came forward with their boundless help.

We read the news of a 12 member family living in difficulty without getting proper food. The news was shown to the students. Not a single word about contribution was spoken. We were waiting for the result.A group of students met the Principal and said they would look after the family. The kindness has started sprouting and the SOLACE has started branching out. The SOLACE team comprising of X standard students visited the house carrying heavy bags of food requirements. They spoke to the family members and promised their help throughout. A family was adopted for food.

Next we had choose someone for medicine. The Project Head visited the General Hospital.A permanently bed ridden patient was adopted. Monthly financial assistance is being provided. As the patients parent had no shelter to reside at , a rented room was also provided. Honorable District Collector Sri K.Satheeshan IAS commented- May this benevolent activity of the SOLACE of Aliya Senior Secondary School be a model to all the schools in this country.

To make aware of the mistakes committed toward the parents by their children, the SOLACE decided to take the students to The Paravanadukkam Oldage home where more than 40 deserted old people live with their sorrows. It was decided to contribute delicious food and fruits once in a month while visiting them to spend a little time with. The inhabitants welcomed the SOLACE team whole heartedly. They did chat, sang and laughed with our team. The tears in their eyes proved that they required someone’s care. The SOLACE team promised their monthly visit. Whatever requested by the oldage home authority was supplied by the SOLACE. It was decided to clean the compound and the interiors once in a month. The cream of the service lies in the fact that the assistance provided is not provided for only once but continues forever.

Three financially backward students were adopted and provided with the financial assistance for their education. Many families receive monthly ration requirements. The success of the project was certified when the students who left the school after completion of their study once again came into the campus with a helping mentality and contributed to the SOLACE in the form of money and machines.

We are satisfied that we are able to turn our students into socially useful responsible citizens rather than effective and efficient machines of cent percent knowledge of the academics. We want to strive more in this area for every student of Aliya must get the answer for the question – How can I be useful, of what service can I be? There is something inside me ,what can it be ?
